A favored individual. This individual may be your preference when attending social events, or simply "chilling". Although this word takes on a multitude of meanings, thanks to the 21st century, one may need clarification when acquaintances might be becoming friends. Friends who decide they are slightly more than friends, but are not a couple may struggle to decide what to label themselves. I believe this word is appropriate for that situation.

Jim and Pam started off as co-workers, but later became friends. Eventually, their relationship evolved to more.
