psychological projection

1. Projection is the psychological phenomenon where someone thinks everyone else is doing and thinking what they are. It is usually seen as the externalisation of a person's negative traits, placing blame on an outside force such as the environment, a government, a society or other people.
2. Projection can also extend to philosophy and knowledge. This occurs when a person or small group of people assume that everyone else is working with the same ideas and/or information that they are. When this fails to happen, however, it can lead to pluralistic ignorance. A telltale sign of this is when a speaker says that "Everybody knows that...(a certain course of action)" is either beneficial or harmful, so society should avoid an impending catastrophe by following the course of action that the speaker proposes.
3. Another common forum for projection is in internet arguments, where it is usually pathetically obvious to everyone except the projector. The problem is recognized in intelligence analysis, in the form of cognitive traps for intelligence analysis.
Psychological Projection:
-An adulterous husband may think his wife is sleeping around.
-Creationists assert that supporters of evolution are religious zealots, and religious (especially Christian) fanatics assert that atheism is a religion.
-Self-proclaimed 'Ex-homosexuals' may state that all gays are empty, sinful shells of human beings that need repairing so they can be good, God-fearing straights.
-Racists who claim that anyone who criticises them must also be racially prejudiced.
-Swinkin' it.

psychological

Pertaining to the functions of the mind, or brain.

From the Greek: psukhē(psyche) meaning soul... that which makes a person that specific person, rather than someone or everyone else.
It's not a real problem, you just made it up inside your head. It is all just psychological... though that pertains more to psychosomatosis, you get the drift.

Psychotomy

A mental condition where a person’s personality seems to have been split into two opposite and distinct behavioral patterns emerging randomly. The condition consists of mutually exclusive bipartition of the psyche; one side of the split psyche is void of empathy, conscience or concern and utilizes poor impulse control, the other side of the psyche contains empathy, caring, concern and the impulse control.
A person with this condition will interact and react changeably (between psyches’) to any given set of circumstances defying logic and, in many cases, common sense. The reactions and decisions of a person with this condition are difficult to predict and without pattern, i.e. it’s a coin toss as to which side of the psyche you’ll get.
Example 1: When the boss sends you an e-mail stating that he/she will be visiting your site and letting people go due to poor performance and to save money. Then, upon arrival, instead of letting people go he/she guarantees them that they will keep their jobs for at least another year.

Example 2: When your friend Joe tells you how much he hates Tom, so much so that he will rip him a new ass the next time he sees him; then when Joe meets up with Tom, Joe acts like he’s not even angry and actually feels sorry for Tom. A few days later Joe tells you again how much he hates Tom and when they meet up again Joe kicks his ass.

If you know people who are like that they have a condition called Psychotomy.
