Metaphysical Theory

The broad, foundational branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of reality, existence, and the fundamental categories of being. It asks: What is real? What is the relationship between mind and matter? It provides the overarching questions and possible answers (idealism, materialism, dualism) within which more specific mechanical theories can be developed.
Example: "Materialism is a Metaphysical Theory. It asserts that everything that exists is ultimately physical matter and energy in motion. It's the big-picture stance. A 'Metaphysical Mechanics Theory' would then try to detail how,

Metaphysical Hypothesis

Any proposition concerning the fundamental nature of reality, existence, and being that lies beyond or underlies the physical world accessible to science. It deals with questions of what is ultimately real: Is consciousness a product of the brain or a fundamental property of the universe? Do abstract concepts like numbers or justice have a real existence? Metaphysical hypotheses provide the foundational assumptions upon which other systems (science, religion) are built, but are themselves notoriously difficult to test empirically.
Example: "My friend's claim that 'suffering has a purpose that shapes the soul' is a Metaphysical Hypothesis. It's not a scientific statement about pain receptors; it's a claim about the ultimate structure of existence and identity. Arguing with him was futile because we were operating from different metaphysical rulebooks—mine said 'reality is material and random,' his said 'reality is purposeful and spiritual.' We weren't debating facts; we were debating the hidden axioms of the universe."

Metaplacebo Effect

The phenomenon where the strength and nature of the placebo effect itself is modulated by external and internal meta-factors: the prestige of the institution, the charisma of the doctor, the patient's prior beliefs about placebos, the cultural narrative around the treatment, and even the patient's awareness that they might be receiving a placebo. The placebo isn't a static trick; it's a dynamic, context-dependent psychological response.
Example: A patient in a famed university hospital trial experiences strong pain relief from a saline injection (placebo). A week later, in a dingy clinic, the same injection does nothing. The Metaplacebo Effect is at work: the aura of authority and expectation in the first setting amplified the placebo response, while the second setting dampened it.

In this specific, modern context, it's the study of the fundamental assumptions, interpretations, and unsolved conceptual puzzles within physics itself. It's not the ancient philosophical field of "metaphysics" (the study of being), but a pragmatic examination of physics' own foundations. It asks: What does quantum mechanics actually tell us about reality? What is the nature of space and time? How do we interpret the mathematical formalism? It’s the troubleshooting manual for when the math works perfectly but the story it tells seems insane.
Example: The endless debates over the Copenhagen Interpretation vs. the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics are Metaphysics (Physics of Physics). The equations predict outcomes identically; the fight is over what the math means for the nature of reality—a question physics itself, as a tool, is unequipped to answer.

Metapsychology

The critical study of the underlying philosophical assumptions, cultural biases, and historical contexts of psychology as a discipline. It goes beyond clinical theories to ask: What is the model of a "mind" or "self" that psychology presupposes? How do its diagnostic categories (like depression or schizophrenia) reflect societal values rather than natural kinds? It examines psychology not as a neutral science of the brain, but as a historically situated practice that shapes and is shaped by the very phenomena it seeks to explain.
Example: Analyzing how the DSM's definition of "mental disorder" has expanded to pathologize normal grief or shyness for the benefit of pharmaceutical markets is an act of Metapsychology. It critiques the economic and social forces constructing our official catalog of suffering.

Metapsychiatry

A more clinically focused cousin of metapsychology, examining the foundations and power structures of psychiatric practice itself. It questions the biological reductionism of modern psychiatry, the ethical implications of involuntary treatment, the influence of Big Pharma, and the line between healing and social control. It’s psychiatry undergoing its own therapy session, confronting its own history of abuses, theoretical dogmas, and role as an agent of normative social order.
Example: The antipsychiatry movement, which critiques the use of diagnoses like schizophrenia as tools for stigmatizing and controlling non-conformists, is a form of Metapsychiatry. It forces the field to ask: "Are we treating illness, or are we policing the boundaries of acceptable thought and behavior?"

Metaphilosophy

The philosophy of philosophy. It steps back to ask: What is the purpose, method, and scope of philosophy itself? Is its goal to discover objective truths, to clarify concepts, or to provide wisdom for living? How does it differ from science? Metaphilosophy is inherently self-referential—it’s philosophy doing its own homework, examining its tools and its right to exist before building another grand system.
Metaphilosophy Example: The debate between analytic philosophy (which views philosophy as conceptual analysis) and continental philosophy (which views it as cultural critique and existential inquiry) is a Metaphilosophical debate. It's not about a specific philosophical problem, but about what philosophy is and should be.
