The MV Wilhelm Gustloff German Nazi cruise ship (later converted into a German troop, hospital, and evacuation ship during Operation Hannibal) that was torpedoed 3 times by a Soviet submarine and sunk in the icy Baltic Sea on January 30th, 1945 (during World War II) while carrying over 10,000 refugees (mostly women and children) and military personnel. She was very highly overloaded and over 9,000 people were killed (most of them civilians, including 5,000 children) and only 1,000 survived. It is the worst single maritime disaster in HUMAN HISTORY, SIX TIMES deadlier than the titanic (which killed 1,500 people).
