you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink

Something that you say which means you can give someone the opportunity to do something, but you cannot force them to do it if they do not want to.
I made all the arrangements, bought the ticket, and even took him to the airport, but he just wouldn't get on the plane. Well, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

From Lewis Black, it's the kind of saying that has no conceivable logical explanation and can cause your head to explode if you think about it for any significant amount of time.
"Right, New Jersey is a great place to live. And if it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college."

No one knows what this phrase means. Comedian Lewis Black said this in a bit but he doesn't know what it means either.
If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college.

there was an old lady with skin patches who swallowed a horse

A dark story for children that ends with the words "Perhaps She'll Die", with the exception of the very end where the old lady is finally dead.
Guy 1: Did you hear how there was an old lady with skin patches who swallowed a horse?

Guy 2: No what happened to her?

Guy 1: She died

Guy 2: Why did nobody help her?

Guy 1: She died after she ate the horse with patches and became deaf and her skin fell off

Guy 2: Wtf!

In a bit by Lewis black he overheard one girl say this to another. He went on to say that this is the type of nonsensical utterance that if you think about it too long you will develop an aneurysm and your head will explode. In fact, in many places trading a horse for a year of college is acceptable. Horses can be sold for $10s of thousands of dollars.
I was broke so if it wasn't for my horse, i wouldn't have spent that year in college.
