Kate Hikes is a pattern recognition expert who works in data analysis.

She's often in trouble with HR for noticing trends in her office, but she's really just trying to help the company, albeit in a naïve and overly goodhearted way.

The term has come to be used in reference to anyone with similar characteristics, who gets in trouble for pointing out things that are true but anathema to talk about.

Friend: Did you hear about Dave getting the ax?
Bro: Yeah, he started paying attention and now he's going the Kate Hikes route.
Friend: If only he knew when to keep his mouth shut.
Kate Hikes: What did he do wrong? Everything he said was true...
