in america a townie is a girl/boy,man/woman who grew up in and lives in a town/city that has a usually large transient population of prep school/college students (or any transient population.) boston, a big city, has alot of townies, but also a large population of college students, most of whom come from small middle-class and upper-middle-class suburban towns accross america.many of these students are ignorant of urban/big city life and draw the wrong conclusions about townies and from what they've seen in the movies and on tv.

jimmy is a townie from boston. he attends college, but commutes to school and works part-time. jimmy has a strong boston (city) accent which is quite distinctive by middle-america standards. he frequently has to repeat himself when speaking with people from oklahoma and nebraska. it's tacitly understood that a boston (or new york) accent is low-brow and it would be best if he learned to lose it and speak "normal" like he's from greenwich, connecticut.

josh is from suburban washington dc. his natural habitat is sitting in a suv with tinted windows in a fast food drive-thru. when he came of age he had to leave his suburban town to attend college/university. he was taught to believe 99% of kids from "the city" are black and/or hispanic and he has a difficult time relating to a white townie like jimmy who's white like him but talks and acts different, i.e. josh is soft spoken while jimmy sounds and acts more rough. guys like josh are particually uncomfortable around so-called working-class blue collar guys like ups/fedex drivers,mailmen,firemen,etc.;
