This term means “Stop hurting yourself or others while you are ahead”

Usually said by someone viewing a situation from the outside.

“Hurt” pertains to all possibilities of stress, pain, and anything alike.

Mark broke up with Liv and he just kept leading her on, he wouldn’t put the knife down.

Liv kept calling Mark out on things that were out of their control, Liv couldn’t put the knife down.
