(n.) — A small structural brace formed by the intersection of two pairs of parallel members, traditionally used in timber framing to prevent lateral twisting at a joint.

Etymology: From Latin octo, “eight,” referring to the eight projecting ends formed by the crossed members, and Old English þorp, originally referring to a fortified enclosure or bounded structure.
