When someone is called out for responding seriously to an obvious troll or satire, they will attempt to explain that their failure to comprehend the source was not due to their own lack of reading ability, but because there are individuals within that group that are so crazy, stupid, or devious that it could have actually been legitimate.

Get the Poe's Defense mug.Dunning-Poe is when someone is too simple-minded to understand that a post/meme/statement online is, in fact, satire. Like Poe's Law, the reader is confused, but in this case, it is because of their lack of intelligence, not the medium. They won't know this, of course, because of the Dunning-Kruger effect which states someone needs to be intelligent enough to understand a topic thoroughly before they can understand their relatively low expertise on the same subject.
