Bigger than Ben Hur

We say something is 'Bigger than Ben Hur' if it is of epic proportions, extravagant, massive, more than it should be.

The MGM film Ben-Hur was released in 1959 and had a budget of $15 million (a huge budget for the day); a gamble that paid off, when it reaped $90 million worldwide.

hur

It's a southern ebonics term that means either "hair" or "here"... However when Nelly came out with the song, "Hot in Here", people everywhere started trying to talk with a southern accent, even if it didn't sound right. This has died down but still today there are some people that try to talk this way; even if they don't sound right.

Ben-Hur

Ben-Hur (1959) follows prince of Judea Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) through his quest to avenge his family after his childhood friend Messala(Stephen Boyd), a Roman Tribune, enslaves him and imprisons his family. The film is nationally renowned not because of its impressive acting, casting, or story line, but because of the phrase "Ramming Speed" spoken a total of 2 times in the film. "Ramming Speed" was used both times when Juda Ben-Hur was enslaved on a Roman naval ship and forced to row. Ramming speed indicates the speed at which the naval ship should achieve and the pace at which Ben-Hur should row.
