A "subway apple" is an apple that had no blemishes and was of nice shape and color. These apples could be sold at higher prices to more affluent people in the city or to train commuters, hence the name.

Subway Transfer

subway Barbie

A woman who waits to get on the subway train to rummage in her pocketbook or shoulder bag for cosmetics and makeup when she could have done the same thing at home. Very annoying to the passengers seated immediately to the left and right of her, as she's elbowing those people in the ribs.
