An extension of the popular internet and text messaging acronym 'lol', the difference being when the 'lol' is aimed at something, or someone, in particular, and not necessarily as a general amusement to the conversation.

Acronym for "laugh(ing) out loud"
Popularized by America Online subscribers in the early-to-mid nineties, spotting someone using the expression was a fairly reliable way to infer that this person was an AOLer. The fact that the L and O keys are adjacent may have helped the acronym find common usage among those who carefully observed their keyboard while typing.
With the decline of AOL, usage of "lol" and its variants spread to any fucktard who somehow found his or her way onto the Internet.

A handy signpost that morons can charitably use online to inform others that they are, in fact, a moron.

a highly overused expression meaning "laugh out loud". part of the all to common internet lingo (lol, rofl, g2g, btw, brb, etc...) that floats around now a days, each letter represents a word, making typing on chat lines and/or online games faster and easier to type... but not always easier to read...
"lol" has now become an overused anoyance. most of the time the typer is not actually laughing and just adds it in as a filler in conversations. used alot when a said person does not know what to type, even if its HIGHLY out of place...
