An insult used in positive context. Males usually being on the receiving end, and although the insult is used positively, often ends up being more degrading than a normal insult would be. Also used to devoid harshness from an insult. Men, don't be deceived; she doesn't actually like it that much.

"you're only 4 inches? awww that's adorable!"

A signal of mutual attraction, directed to a man by a woman, as she turns away and very subtly angles her hips and derriere.

Knowing his eyes were on her, she turned to give him a fleeting but unmistakable backsided compliment.

backdoor compliment

A backdoor compliment is a way of giving somebody a compliment, which can be misread as an insult.

Poppy: I'm whiny as hell, no fun at all.
Dave: I think you are. Fun that is, not whiny - maybe a little, in a nice way.
Poppy: Hey!!! Only I'm allowed to call myself whiny

Dave: Yeah but I said 'in a nice way' so it was a compliment
Poppy: Backdoor compliment!
