Get the math is hard mug.A four-letter word that traditionally used to be called “arithmetic” in elementary or primary school—the third “R” in Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic. A much-disliked school subject that is mostly used as a social filter to separate the nerds from the herd, or to politically decide the future haves and the have-nots in society.
Unlike our parents and grandparents who’re schooled in old-school math, we’re now taught new math (which includes new ways to add, subtract, and multiply numbers), Common Core math (which incorporates many new math techniques), and Singapore math (which integrates the concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) approach to learning math and the bar model method to solve word problems).

Get the Napkin Math mug. When more and more countries around the globe are fast embracing the Singapore math curriculum, or part of it, so as not to be left behind educationally and economically, as they copycat or emulate the best educational practices used by local math educators and tiger parents, who have helped put the “fine” city of Singapore on the world’s math education map.
Like the democratization of music, the democratization of Singapore math ought to force math educators in the city-state to embrace the courage imperative, by turning barriers into breakthroughs, or obstacles into opportunities, if they want to maintain an asymmetric advantage over their counterparts in other high GDP economies.
