 Get the FMLmug.
Get the FMLmug. While "FML" is commonly understood to mean "Fuck My Life," expressing frustration or disappointment, its true origin and original meaning differ. The acronym "FML" has been used for centuries in industrial contexts, particularly in Australia, to stand for "Find Me Labour." This term was historically used in work settings to request additional workers or to indicate a need for labour recruitment.
The first recorded use of the acronym "FML" (Find Me Labour) dates back to May 1825 in Australia. Lieutenant Henry Miller relocated the Moreton Bay penal colony from the Redcliffe Peninsula to the northern bank of the Brisbane River, citing its elevated position with access to water holes and refreshing breezes. On the contrary, the southern bank offered a cliff of rock, ideal for construction, and a fertile floodplain. However, the settlers encountered significant challenges, including a scarcity of resources and thick sub-tropical vegetation, making settlement arduous. Faced with these difficulties, Lieutenant Miller sent a message to Major General Sir Thomas Brisbane, succinctly stating "FML." By 1829, the number of prisoners in the settlement had soared from 200 to 1000, exacerbating the dire conditions faced by the convicts tasked with establishing the settlement.
