A misconception. It is supposed to be a combination of heavy metal and rap music, but these genres are fundamentally different. Rap focuses primarily on rhyming vocals with a simple and repetative beat in the background. Metal is the combination of fast and complicated instrument work with intense vocals. Hence the two genres cannot mix.
People say crap bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach and Rage Against the Machine are rap metal. None of these bands have an ounce of metal in them, and probably fail at rapping too. They are prime examples of undertalented, overwhore MTV bullshit.

Hardcore-metal, characterized by intense screaming, extreme speed and grinding double bass pedals/drums (whereas if the music being played is too fast for an actual drummer, a programmable drum machine will be used).

A genre that like most genre of music has some good bands but also has some posers. The posers really make the genre look bad.
An example of a good bands would be Motley Crew.
An example of a poser band would be Kiss. They are more of a travelling theatrical group than they are actually a band.
But I must say Hair Metal really isn't metal at all. Nothing is heavy about it.

Me: What is your fav. type of metal.
Person: I like hair metal.
Me: But I said metal.
Person: They are metal, they have alot of hair.
Me: That has nothing to do with anything.

An extreme form of heavy metal which contains blast beats, double bass, growling vocals and distorted guitars. Most songs are about the grotesque and darkside of life. While most of these bands claim to have the worlds most talented musicians, they all seem to sound identical.
Hey didn't this song already pass? No, we're already on track #10, but what did you expect? It's Death Metal.

Emo "metal" is most commonly referred to as Screamo or Post-Hardcore.
It is a blend of guitar "riffs" usually written in a minor key to give a strong emotional feeling, heavy screaming vocals, and beautiful (sometimes harmonized) melodic vocal patterns, all intricately orchestrated to sound beautifully dark, usually melodic, and always catchy. Emo-Metal is what happens when metal bands get tired of being poor and want to make money. It is essentially metal's attempt at entering the mainstream.(and uranium hardly ever plays anything remotely close to emo-metal.)Bands, such as UNDERoath or Beloved(R.I.P), have perfected the style with others closely following their lead.
