Many people have used the word "emo" as a bad thing. I read definitions from 5 people, all used this definition:
"Angry teenagers who dress in black and act miserable around others"
That, however, is not the definition of emo. That is in fact the definition of goth. The real definition, excluding all stereotypes and falsehoods, is:
People, ages 13 & up, who feel emotional. Thus, emo. Most emotions expressed are
1. Anger at the world
2. Saddness at a tragic event (death, near-death experience, ect.)
After some began to dress in black, it began the stereotype. Again, they are not to be confused with goths who are, as defined by ones I've met, mostly Wickens and dress in black and all that. Emo's are often angry at the world because many people can be idiots (that is slightly an inside joke, but not quite. So please don't reject this)
Another stereotype is that emos are miserable around people. This is completely untrue. I, actually being emo myself, am quite perky around people and am only angry when alone. Most emos are loners, that part is true, but only because of the aforementioned reasons.
Ironically, the reason I an writing this is the exact same reason I am emo. Far too many people make these mistakes, so I am hoping the world will read this and for once, understand what they're actually talking about.

The band Green Day is considered an "emo" band due to their tendency to write songs such as "American Idiot," which uses terms on how America is controlled by the media, and making many mistakes, making them angry.

Get the EMO mug.It's not people who cut themselves, or hate themselves and life. Not people who dress in skinny jeans with hair over their eye and band tee's. Emo came from emotive music and people began saying things like they cut themselves or all they do is cry, when that style became popular. Emo is really just a style of music that has meaning to it. Instead of things like 'Can't Be Tamed by Miley Cyrus' that has no depth, there is songs like 'Miserable At Best by Mayday Parade' that has depth. Basically, emo came about to label people who have a sensitive side.
Typical stereo type.
Person #1- That guy is wearing skinny jeans and isn't smiling, he must be emo.
Person #2- Yeah. He probably cuts himself every night.

The most common use of the term is to describe one who is clinically depressed, and possibly cuts themselves, writes depressing poetry, seems homosexual, wears eyeliner, usual attire is black,overreacts to small problems often and even writes suicide notes.

Get the Emo mug.People,who despite others opinions couldnt give less of a damn what everyone else thinks,Some yes are fakes.But There are some ,that because of those fakes everyone thinks that they are or act the same.No not all emo's cut themselves.."hardcore emo's" doesnt mean they are sooo emo theyll cut themselves.because "hardcore emo's" are usually fake(not all but usually) because they belive that thats what being emo means.Anywho you can usually "distinguish" what an emo looks like because Most wear the next items.-skinny jeans(usually black) -tight t-shirts or v-necks(band ones or badass cartoon drawings on them(x) -sweaters (tight on them) -accesories(bow,bracelets,scrfs,chokers.ect.
