A form of public call‑out where the original call‑out is a reaction to provocation, but the provocateur’s role is hidden. The person who orchestrated the conflict waits until the target does something that can be framed as scandalous—or provokes them into doing so—then “exposes” that action while omitting their own role. Reactive exposing is common in influencer dramas, where a creator will bait a rival into a heated exchange, then publish selective screenshots to make the rival look unhinged. The exposé becomes a performance of righteousness built on concealed provocation.
Example: “He sent her dozens of hostile DMs, then when she finally replied with a harsh tone, he posted only her reply with the caption ‘Look at this abuse.’ Reactive exposing: bait, wait, then ‘expose’ the reaction.”

Get the Reactive Exposing mug.A bias where individuals or groups engage in "exposing" others—revealing alleged wrongdoing, hypocrisy, or scandal—while being selectively blind to similar or worse behavior in their own side. The Bias of Exposing is what makes partisans obsessive about the other side's scandals and oblivious to their own. It's the bias of the whistleblower who only blows the whistle on enemies, of the accountability activist who only holds the other side accountable. The Bias of Exposing is a form of motivated perception: we see clearly what serves our interests and are blind to what threatens them. It's the cognitive engine of hypocrisy, the fuel of selective outrage.
Example: "He spent hours exposing corruption in the opposing party but never mentioned scandals in his own. The Bias of Exposing wasn't deliberate hypocrisy; it was genuine blindness. He saw what he was motivated to see and was blind to the rest. His outrage was sincere—and selective."

A social environment where "exposing" others—revealing scandals, calling out wrongdoing, holding people accountable—has become a dominant cultural practice, often detached from any genuine commitment to justice or truth. The Culture of Exposing is what happens when accountability becomes performance, when calling out becomes a way of building status, when exposure is pursued for its own sake rather than for any constructive outcome. In this culture, everyone is watching everyone, waiting for the misstep that can be exposed. The goal is not reform but destruction, not accountability but status. The Culture of Exposing is the social media mob made permanent, the cancel culture mindset institutionalized.
Example: "The community had become a Culture of Exposing: everyone watching everyone, waiting for the slip that could be screenshotted and shared. Accountability was the justification; status was the goal. No one felt safe; everyone felt righteous. The culture was consuming itself."

Get the Culture of Exposing mug.A cultural shift where public “exposés”—often videos, threads, or documents—have replaced formal accountability mechanisms. In this culture, anyone can be “exposed” for past statements, alleged misdeeds, or association with unpopular figures. The exposé is typically one‑sided, widely shared, and often leads to career destruction or harassment. The culture treats exposure as justice, regardless of fairness or proportionality.
Example: “A single screenshot of a decade‑old tweet ended her career; the Culture of Exposing had made everyone both judge and executioner.”
