We've learned to synthesize plastics, medicines, fibers, fuels. We're learning to synthesize rare earths, advanced alloys, perfect crystals. The endpoint, if there is one, is a world where the only limit is imagination—and energy, because synthesis always costs energy. But energy can also be synthesized, from the sun, from the wind, from the atoms themselves.
