It's the simple sarcastacism that's amusing. Something as simple as saying, "Oh, bless your heart".

sarcastic coughing fit

When a cough is used to indicate you think the exact opposite of what you just said, often the cough can be used to disguise saying what you actually think.

1. Yes, I'm sure you don't fancy him (sarcastic coughing fit)
2. Yes, he made the first move *cough* you so came onto him *cough*

When sarcasm goes horribly, horribly wrong. Generally a joke.

Guy (to fat girl): Hey baby, you're so hot.

Girl: Thanks! Let's hang out.

Guy (to self): *Dammit.*

This is Sarcastrophy, the use of sarcasm in describing the girl caused him to have the whale follow him around all night. Poor bastard.
