basically anime is just japanese cartoons that Americans say is "trash" when anime has several genres and different themes-just like cartoons. The distinctive features that anime actually have are realistic animation, a storyline-unlike most cartoons where it is just random episodes, and Japanese customs in the shows. Overall Anime is different from cartoons but when people say it is "trash" they usually call it trash for the wrong reasons.

What's not to like, I mean, the plots are profound and dramatic, the girls are HOT!!! and there is usually a lot of violence and sexuality. Content aside, the graphics are good and the characters are usually broad and creative! I like anime, I don't give a shit if you don't, fool!
