1. Irma tried being like his friends Ryan R and Josh, who dressed and talked black, because they were. Irma began hanging out with them and copying their style right down to their socks, although he felt awkward and looked like an idiot. When he finally realized this, three years later, he tried being preppy like his friends Jim and Ryan W, but couldn't fit in with them either because he wasn't a prep.
2. Irma began watching MTV and BET and was influenced right away. He lived in a rich, crime-free, white collar neighborhood, but tried acting as though he were from the ghettoes of southwest Detroit. He wore baggy Girbaud jeans, a wave cap, and white tees down to his knees, although he looked retarded.

Irma: You are Asian. Black kids don't try to be Asian so why do you try to be black? You are a geek, face it. Popular kids don't try being geeks so why try being a popular kid?
