pre-dating

The awkward stage of a relationship where the two individuals are spending a lot of time together but have not actually admitted that they are dating.

It is not necessarily a desirable state to be in.

Can also be used to describe two friends of the opposite sex who spend all their time together but who are not actually dating but may as well be. Should not be confused with friends with benefits.

Sandra: So are you and John together?
Jane: No, we're pre-dating at best.
Sandra: Oh...bummer.

Dara: What's up with Laura and Ed?
Anita: Oh, they're pre-dating.

the difference between going on dates and dating

1) going on dates is self explanatory. you've hung out alone on purpose. dating is when you're not going on dates with anyone else, and ***THE GUY HAS ASKED THE GIRL TO BE HIS GIRLFRIEND.*** (or the girl has asked to be his girlfriend, or they decided amongst themselves that they were officially "dating"/"going out"; etc.)

2) dating is facebook official. ...most of the time.

Examples:
1)
Girl:"So I went on a date with Tom this weekend."
Girl's friend:"So are you dating him now?"
Girl:"No, he only asked me to go to the movies."
Girl's friend:"Do you think he'll ask you to be his girlfriend?"
Girl:"Probably not, he's a boy, so he probably doesn't know the difference between going on dates and dating, and thinks that one date means we're dating. I better set him straight."

2)
SMART BOY:"I went on another date with Lisa last night, it was really great. I think I'm gonna ask her to be my girlfriend tomorrow."
DUMB BOY:"Wait I thought you guys were dating?"
SMART BOY:"No, we've been on a couple dates, but we're not official."

3)
Boy:"Will you go out with me?
Girl:"On a date? Or dating?"
Boy:"Uhhh..."

Partners usually meet eachother through social media. E-dating for some part is hated on due to how many e-daters have met eachother on Discord. Range of ages relative to one's own that it is acceptable (not creepy) to date. Usually:
- Lower limit = (your age / 2) + 7
- Higher limit = (your age - 7) * 2

- Man, she's too young.
- No way, I'm 26, she's 20, just within my dating range!
- So was that woman at 38.
- Yeah I am more MILF oriented now.

Dry Dating

Form of casual, new relationship exploration that possesses many of the characteristics of traditional dating (e.g. dinners out, cooking together, drinks at bar, movies on the sofa) but lacks to a confusing extent a physical component; not even a kiss goodnight. Especially perplexing to one party when the other (the non-move-making party) is in the initiator of all dates.
