The term is derivative from the slang version of "nug" that references "kind bud" (marijuana with high THC content), and is usually only used to describe music listened to by hippies.

One of the most popular file-sharing websites, nugs.net, from which music can be downloaded, helped the term "nug" develop its association with music.

"I need to hook up some nugs (good music) for this road trip".

"You gotta hear this sticky "nug" from the New Year's Phish run in Miami". - the term nug in this case could reference the entire concert, or a specific song played at the concert.
