If you were to observe a bright star at a low level will be your first indicator. If no other stars are visible and you see one bright light that could be one. You will be able to confirm this by the flashing re and blue lights required of them if flown in an area with passenger jet traffic. They can be as low as 2000ft is the lowest we've observed here.
