CRAPPY MUSIC that goes by the standards and implied guidelines set by other songs that are currently popular.

The only inkling of individuality is either a) the lead singer's voice, or b)the fucking tone of the guitar.
Both of those are still a rarity.

Sometimes, you can define a mainsrteam band by the ranking they are at on the top 40 list, or the iTunes most popular. But not always, because sometimes good indie music is mistakenly put there.

jock: "Dude, I just got this new CD. It's 'American Idiot' man!! I feel so bad-ass! Aren't they awesome, singing about America and shit?!"

smart indie kid: "Fuck man, don't spend money on that mainstream garbage.
Go buy some Pinback."

mainstream indie

Bands popular amongst only indie kids, but break out into the MTV crowd. Includes almost all bands that start with "The". They're not indie anymore, but you don't know what else to peg them as.

Hipster 1: I cannot stand this wave of mainstream indie, those bands were soo much better before they sold out and got big.

Hipster 2: Ugggh, I know, those bands are just so uncool now.

Mainstream Hipster

A person, usually among the young demographic, who consistently wears plaid shirts and skinny jeans. They go for the 'hipster look', however, they generally still listen to mainstream pop and hip-hop, which defeats the purpose of their efforts. (They may also listen to 'alternative' like Mumford and Sons or Death Cab for Cutie's new album). Mainstream Hipsters will generally group together to form their own clique of MHs, however, they can be spotted among other social groups occasionally.

Mainstream Hipster 1: "Omg, did you know that Ben Gibbard used to have this band called The Postal Service? Omg, that was like, so long ago."
MH 2: "No way! That's soo cool. Death Cab for Cutie is like, my FAVORITE. They're sooo hipster."
MH 1: "omg I know."
*real hipsters walk by, listening to Jinja Safari and Arctic Monkeys*
Real Hipster 1: "Wow, look at those Mainstream Hipsters."
Real Hipster 2: "Hipster fail."
