A term used to make a joke that starts out as someone knocking on the door.

Dingbat: Knock knock.
Scallywag: Who’s there?
Dingbat: Mike.
Scallywag: Mike who?
Dingbat: Oxmaul.
Scallywag: I don’t get it. Mike Oxmaul?
Dingbat: I didn’t know that. HA HA!

usually a reserve for a pool/snooker game, that is left on the side of the table when someone else is playing, so that you 'reserve' your game after theirs, or after the knocks been put down before yours.
