Semi-celebrity

someone who isn't an instantly recognisable celebrity but isn't one of the masses. Someone that has some sort of celebrity status but their status is temporary - like someone who is on Big Brother or a weather girl or a drag queen

That guy is the guy who just got evicted from Big Brother - he's such a semi-celebrity.

Semi-sleep

The area between being awake and asleep. Consisting of eyes closed, body semi to fully relaxed, and still hearing things going on around you. This sleep normally happens at school or some other dull location/event. Semi-sleep is not long, typically lasting no more than 30 minutes.

Michael woke up after 15 minutes of semi-sleep, feeling slightly better than when he fell asleep.

semi-date

A semi-date is an encounter between members of the opposite sex or of the same sex, whereby at least one of the aforementioned members is attracted to the other and hopes that the friendship becomes something more. It is referred to as a "semi-date" rather than a "date" because is has not been arranged according to the terms of a traditional "date", but rather happens out of the blue or is an instance of "hanging out as friends", during which the two of you spend time alone together.

I happened to go and see a play and bumped into this guy I knew there, whom I'm attracted to. Afterwards I suggested we go for a drink in a nearby bar, and as he didn't have enough cash on him, I paid for his drink. It wasn't a pre-arranged date, but we were alone, and I do have romantic feelings for him. You could say I paid his way in our "semi-date".

semi auto

Short for "semi-automatic."

1. (adj.) The characteristic, of a firearm, of being able to fire a single round for each pull of the trigger.

2. (n.) A firearm with this characteristic.

Commonly mistaken to mean fully automatic, which indicates a firearm most people would call a "machine gun," with which the user pulls the trigger a single time and holds it and the entire magazine is fired in succession, usually within a few seconds.

My Glock is a semi-auto with a 10-round magazine, so if I want to fire ten shots I have to pull the trigger ten times.

semi-productive procrastination

(noun) When you're doing work that's not the work you should be doing, but instead of just procrastinating you're being semi-productive and doing something that's not really important but still relates to your task.

also: (verb) to semi-productively procrastinate

Similar to pro-crastination, but not nearly as productive. Different in that semi-productive procrastination is still about what you should be doing, and can actually lead to what you should be doing.

Similar to productive procrastination, but different in that when you semi-productively procrastinate, what you're doing still relates a little to what you SHOULD be doing but just isn't it.

kid 1: "Hey are you working on that soc. paper due tomorrow?"
kid 2: "Kinda. I've spent the last hour making an outline for what we're supposed to be writing about."
kid 1: "He didn't ask for an outline."
kid 2: "Yeah I know. I'm semi-productively procrastinating."

parent: "Stop procrastinating on your book report!"
kid: "It's not procrastination -- I'm just reading the book first and then answering the questions."
parent: "Instead of answering as you read?"
kid: "It's SEMI-PRODUCTIVE procrastination."
