The fallacy presents, for example, the Holodomor or the Killing Fields as uniquely communist evils, while ignoring that Ukraine also suffered under tsarist rule, Nazi occupation, and capitalist shock therapy—or that Cambodia was devastated by US bombing before the Khmer Rouge took power. Specifying deprivation allows the fallacy-user to condemn particular events while absolving the systems that created the conditions for those events. It's history as highlight reel, atrocity as argument-ender.

A fallacy that focuses on specific, often well-documented grievances while ignoring the broader context in which they occur. The fallacy presents, for example, police violence against a particular individual as an isolated incident, rather than as part of a pattern of systemic racism. Or it focuses on a particular policy failure while ignoring the successes of the same system. Specifying grievance allows the fallacy-user to acknowledge problems without addressing their causes, to admit that "mistakes happen" while denying that the mistakes are systematic. It's the logic of "one bad apple" applied to everything—acknowledging the specific while denying the general.

Example: "He admitted that yes, that particular police killing was tragic. But the Fallacy of Specific Grievance meant he never had to ask why it kept happening, why certain communities kept being targeted, why the system produced the same outcome over and over. One tragedy, acknowledged; the pattern, ignored. The specific had been used to hide the general."

Fallacy of Specific Privation

A fallacy where someone identifies a specific harm, flaw, or failure within a system and uses that specific critique to dismiss the entire system without addressing its other aspects, benefits, or complexities. The critique may be valid—the specific privation is real—but the fallacy lies in treating it as dispositive, as if acknowledging one problem means nothing else matters. "This hospital has long waiting times, therefore healthcare is completely broken." "This politician made a mistake, therefore everything they've done is worthless." "This theory has one unexplained phenomenon, therefore the whole theory is garbage." Specific Privation mistakes a part for the whole, a flaw for a failure, a critique for a conclusion.

"I pointed out one limitation in a philosophical framework I generally admire. Response: 'Aha! So you admit it's completely wrong!' That's Fallacy of Specific Privation—a valid critique of one aspect becomes, in their hands, proof that the whole thing is worthless. Criticism isn't condemnation, but try telling them that."
