I would like to start this by saying that I wasnt alive in the seventies and I never got the chance to see the likes of The Pistols, The Clash or even The Ramones. This is simply my opinion.
I think that:
Punk is a loud, fast, often anti-establishment type of music. It was influenced by and has influenced many different types of music. It started in the seventies and was popularized by The Clash, Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Punk is not an image it is a belief and a lifestyle as well as a type of music.
Since the end of the seventies it has become impossible to truly define becuase it gave birth to so many different forms of music such as indie, goth, hardcore, emo, punk pop etc. Because of this a sort of "punk snobbery" has developed, were "true punks" look down upon others for not being around in that era.
Definately Punk: Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones
A little bit Punk: The Jam, Blondie, Green Day
Not Punk: Avril Lavine, Good Charlotte, Elliot Minor

Punk is not a fashion sense and it should not be an opportunity to look down on people because they are just beggining to get into Punk with "softer bands" like The Jam or Green Day.

PUNK IS...
1. Someone who listens to Punk music. No matter what they look like! No matter what race, gender, age or sexuality.
2. A genre of music. Hard to describe but you can tell when you hear it. Crass, conflict and Restarts being obvious bands. But also spreading out with acoustic, folk, ska, metal or hardcore influence. King Blues, Zounds and Extreme Noise Terror and Mischief Brew being examples.
NOT...
1.A fashion.
2.Almost all of stuff you'd hear on radio or television.
3.Homophobia, Sexism and Racism!

As a noun: I'm going to rape that guy and turn him into my punk.
As a verb: I'm gonna punk that bitch.
Past tense verb: That victim of sodomy was just punked.

A punk is an individual, someone who will do anything they feel is right or necessary; someone who doesn't conform to society or the perfect person... A true punk doesn't even conform to the "punk" stereotype. A true punk will fuck this "definition" of punk and go out and be whoever the fuck they want to be, no matter what anyone has to say about it.
Person: "Do you associate yourself as a punk?"
punk: "I could care less. I'm me."
