A word for someone, especially someone playing a sport, that messes up and then blames something, someone else, or a supposed injury.

“He just kicked the ball skew, now he’s sponging by pretending his foot is sore.”

It can also be used as an excuse for losing, before or after competing in something.

A: “My wrist is a bit sore so I might not play so well today.” B: “Don’t be a fucken spong now!”

sponge-worthy

A phrase coined by Elaine on the TV show "Seinfeld." Refers to Elaine's favorite kind of birth control that was ultimately taken off the market. Elaine bought all the remaining stock she could get her hands on and then hoarded her stash of sponges. She defined her dates as being "sponge-worthy" or not i.e. if they had sex. If he was worth using one of her hoarded sponges!

Jerry- I heard you went out with Bob last night. Was he sponge-worthy?
Elaine- VERY sponge-worthy!

Or alternate response from Elaine-I don't waste my sponges on just anybody. He has to be sponge worthy, Jerry!

Spongebob Close-up

A technique used in various cartoons in which the camera zooms into a character's face revealing disgusting or grotesque features (ex. bloodshot eyes, nosehairs, pimples, etc.) that usually are not noticed when the camera is at a certain distance from the character. Commonly used in the show "Spongebob Squarepants".

Spongebob: Hey Squidward, has my Acne Cream worked yet?

Viewer 1: Get ready for a Spongebob Close-up, dude!
