(verb) The act of crafting an elaborate lie or hoax in an effort to maintain a false narrative that supports one's supposed oppressed status and thereby secures social capital (i.e. sympathy, compensation, a social media following, ratings, etcetera) and/or denigrates one's supposed oppressor.

Smollett was a TV series 'Empire' actor who staged a false attack on himself, hiring 2 Nigerian brothers, he claimed to be Trump supporters, to hang a noose around his neck and pour gasoline on him for $3500, claiming it was a racist, homophobic attack. Police found out it was a staged attack, and arrested him for making a false report.

You can't be Smolletting yourself in a climate like this.
