Wow, what I read on this page about black metal is probably the biggest nonsense since what I've read here about trance music.
The difference between black and death metal is not the vocals, there is plenty of black metal that is even clean sung. Black metal is not about extreme metal, about blastbeats, in fact: a lot of well respected black metal bands avoid blastbeats all together. Black metal is not about satanism, that's just the popular poserblack. Sensible bands try to avoid satanism all together and utilze other themes 'winter' is an often used one.
Black metal is not about anti popmusic, or anti electronic music. True black metal is linked to electronic genres such as ambient, noise and industrial and encorporates elements from that.
So what defines black metal?
What sets black metal appart from death metal is effectively (for the record) what sets trance appart from techno & what sets ambient appart from lounge.
Namely: More monotone, more rooted in classical music theory, less rithmic, more atmospherical, more about the emotion, less about the grooves and melodies that function as a chordprogression.

Where Age of Empires even accomplishes to make an almost fully symetric RTS game unbalanced StarCraft is stil renowned for it's balance eventhough the playable races are highly asymetric. In starcraft it is possible to completely destroy your enemy with half the amound of manpower he has if you are more skilled in the game. StarCraft truly is one of the best if not the best RTS game ever made by my knowledge.

Get the StarCraft mug.Popular band associated with 'goth culture' though the latter of the two statements could (And should.. by the power of me. I command!) be perceived as false. Arguably while creating very accessible sounds which is in theory technically okay on CD. Is still unbearable to hear live as even some fans admit. Also the lead singer's voice would be without the infuence of Bush cause the Nato to attack America for not getting rid of unauthorised weapons of mass destruction. Although the editor of that voice is a very talented guy.
As said, the Evanescence sound is accesible, thus apeals to a wide audience and emotional and atmospheric complexity is kept to a minimal level. Amy Lee is partially responsible for an increase in depression reports as well amongst fans as amongst people who happen to posses radios although the validy of the claims of the prior one should not be taken seriously and should be laughed upon.
As also said the so called 'goth culture' it is associated with is a mistake maken by people who can't tell a pubical rebel dressed totally in black with extravagant apearance and heavily questionable intellectual abilities. From a goth who are mainly dressed totally in black with extravagant apearance and are able to - and will for the love of God do so whenever they have the chance - to demonstrate a highly developed range of knowledge and a philosphical way of approaching life.
With that said, altough the Evenescence listeres at least try to hide it with faking depression, all of the in the above paragraph subculture inhabitands generally think they're culture is the best in the world.
People who like Evanescence also have the intriging property of voting against urbandictionary difinitions which do not match there personal taste, thus this definition will probably be bannished to the final page.

Get the Evanescence mug.1. Probably the shittiest excuse for black metal ever. The likes of mayhem caused me to believe black metal was shitty for most of my life until I found out of some real black metal bands like Vinteriket, Arcturus and Darkspace.
Mayhem atracts idiot rampant teens who give black metal a bad name and let people think that black metal is about occultness and satanism or something.
The beautiful side of Mayhem is however that it murders itself out. Session member Varg Vikernes killed lead guitarist Euronimous and the lead vocallist Dead didn't feel like letting anyone take effort to it so he killed himself.

3. The opposite of good black metal.
