A form of play in which a dog enthusiastically chases after a thrown object but does not retrieve or return it to the thrower. This behavior taps into the dog’s natural prey drive, particularly the chasing aspect, without completing the full sequence of fetching. While many dogs instinctively enjoy the pursuit, the act of retrieval often requires additional training and reinforcement.
It’s not fetch, it’s cardio. My dog’s out there running Olympic sprints while I stand like a clown waiting for a stick that’s never coming back. Chase-only fetch strikes again.

The phenomenon occurs when multiple defenders are in position to challenge an attacking player, but due to hesitation, miscommunication, or uncertainty about responsibility, none of them step up to engage. As a result, the attacker faces less resistance than expected, often gaining space or time to advance. This defensive lapse is driven by a diffusion of responsibility, where each defender assumes another will take action, leading to collective inaction.
It was pressing paralysis at its finest, three defenders doing the ‘after you, sir’ routine while the striker waltzed through like he owned the place.
