Pestilence

Something that will never really quit pestering people, no matter who tells you it will end if you wear a mask or get a shot, or fall in line to do everything else you are told, such as a deadly virus.
The pestilence awakened in the darkness of people's dreams about what they weren't fighting for.

Coronavirus

There are two kinds of people in the way they think of the coronavirus, there are the ones that defend every mandate, rule, or law an entity such as the government or healthcare makes, and there are the ones that defend life as it always was before the pandemic. As with any divide in society, there are going to be people trying to play all sides of any divide, pretending to be friendly with all while not really being friendly with any.
He/she saw dollar signs in the coronavirus while everyone else saw either no choice but to follow orders, or a fight to keep from losing everything.

Standoffish

Always forcing other people to stand up to you or resort to fighting.
The mouthy girl's standoffish ways came directly from her uber competitive nature.

Cool counterpoint

There's nothing cool about somebody that is around because they see dollar signs everywhere.
What the developer was saying wasn't a cool counterpoint, it was as cool as penguin shit. The neighborhood was cool and diverse the way it was before the developer came in trying to fuck with and gentrify it, before the respect for the people of the neighborhood was overran, and before the people were left without much choice but to fight or flee. Not everyone was going to flee like the developers wanted, no matter how much rent or housing/living costs went up, trying to price them out.

SouthEnd bros

A nicer way of saying a dork that roams around town like they own it.
Perhaps the SouthEnd bros and their female equivalents should respect the people of their new city instead of trying to overrun them, after all, not every guest is a welcome one, and certainly not forever.

Police state

What the coronavirus has allowed all countries to become. Whether the cops recruited are male or female, the resulting police state is the same, an overrecruited and overpoliced population, no matter what the people being policed (or recruited for that matter) look like.
There are no checks and balances in a police state, what little rights people had before are considered by the police and entities that fund them to be surrendered by the people being policed.

Coronavirus

Nowadays you have two kinds of people in the way they think about the coronavirus, you have the ones that defend any mandate, rule or law the government suggests for them, and you have the people that defend the way they've always lived, no matter how exciting the new way they are being told to live might have seemed at first. The latter group hasn't been doing much fighting to get their voices heard though, just about all of what people are seeing and hearing on TV is dominated by the first group.
Just about anything people have heard about the coronavirus in the past year and a half seems designed to make them panic and surrendee control of their lives to an outside entity that they for some reason began to trust more than themselves to take care of them, even if taking care of themselves was never a major issue before 2020.
