Paraphysicalism

The view that there are phenomena that run parallel to the physical—alongside it, interacting with it, but not reducible to physical explanation. Paraphysicalism suggests that consciousness, for example, may be paraphysical: correlated with brain activity but not identical to it, interacting with the physical without being physical. Similarly, information, meaning, and perhaps even some paranormal phenomena may be paraphysical: real, causal, and parallel to the physical world without being part of it. It's the position that the physical is not the whole story, but what lies beyond may be parallel rather than superior—another layer, another dimension, another order of reality entirely.

Supernaturalism

The belief in realities that transcend and can intervene in the natural world—gods, spirits, miracles, divine agency. Unlike Extranaturalism (which posits an exterior that may not interact), Supernaturalism emphasizes interaction: the supernatural can and does affect natural events. Prayers are answered, miracles occur, spirits intervene, divine will shapes history. Supernaturalism is the worldview of most theistic religions, many spiritual traditions, and anyone who believes that there is something beyond nature that cares about and acts within nature. It's the position that the universe is not a closed system, that the boundaries between natural and supernatural are permeable, and that help can come from outside.

"Science can't explain why I survived that accident when I should have died. Supernaturalism says: maybe something beyond nature intervened. Not coincidence, not luck—actual agency from outside the natural order. You don't have to believe it, but millions do, and their experiences of rescue feel as real as anything science measures."

Extranaturalism

The philosophical position that there exist realities, phenomena, or dimensions entirely outside the natural order—not just beyond current scientific understanding, but fundamentally exterior to nature itself. Unlike paranaturalism (which suggests parallel phenomena that may eventually be naturalized), Extranaturalism posits a genuine outside: realms that do not interact with nature, or interact in ways that cannot be captured by natural laws. This might include Platonic forms, transcendent divine realities, or dimensions completely inaccessible to empirical investigation. Extranaturalism is the view that nature is not a closed system, that there is an exterior, and that some truths—mathematical, mystical, moral—may originate there.

"You think everything real is either natural or supernatural? Extranaturalism says: there may be realities entirely outside both—not beyond nature in the sense of intervening, but exterior to it entirely. Platonic forms, if real, are extranatural: they don't cause anything in nature, but they're still real. The universe may have an outside, even if we can never reach it."

Superphysicalism

The view that there are realities beyond the physical—not separate from it, but superphysical: above, beyond, or more fundamental than matter. Consciousness may be superphysical: not reducible to brain activity but not separable from it either. Mathematical truths may be superphysical: real, discovered, but not physical objects. Values, meanings, purposes—superphysical realities that shape physical events without being physical themselves. Superphysicalism is the position that the physical is real but not the whole story, that there are levels of reality that include and transcend the physical without denying it.

"The beauty of this music moved me to tears. Physicalism says: sound waves, neural firing, dopamine. Superphysicalism says: yes, and also beauty, meaning, transcendence—real phenomena, causal phenomena, not reducible to the physical. The physical carried it, but the superphysical is what mattered. Both are real."

Paranaturalism

A framework for understanding phenomena that seem to run parallel to nature—alongside it, interacting with it, but not fully captured by conventional naturalistic accounts. Paranaturalism suggests that experiences labeled paranormal (ghosts, psi, synchronicity) may be natural in some expanded sense, but operate according to principles not yet recognized by mainstream science. It's a middle path: not supernatural (outside nature) and not yet naturalized (explained by current science), but potentially natural in ways we don't yet understand. Paranaturalism keeps inquiry open where dogmatism would close it.

"I've had experiences—coincidences too meaningful to ignore, feelings of presence, knowing things I shouldn't. Paranaturalism says: maybe these are real, maybe they're natural, maybe we just don't understand how yet. Not supernatural, not delusion—paranatural. Supernormalism

The study of or belief in capacities, experiences, or phenomena that exceed normal human functioning but may not be supernatural—enhanced perception, exceptional intuition, mystical experiences, heightened states of consciousness. Supernormalism suggests that human potential may be greater than average performance suggests, and that some people occasionally access capacities that are latent in all of us. It's the position that the "normal" is not the limit, that extraordinary experiences may reveal possibilities rather than pathologies, and that human nature includes potentials rarely actualized.

"She knew who was calling before looking at the phone, every time. Supernormalism says: not psychic, not supernatural—just a capacity some people have, maybe latent in all of us, maybe trainable. Supernormal, not paranormal. Beyond average, not beyond nature."

Metanaturalism

A position that affirms nature while recognizing that "nature" is a concept with a history, a concept that can and should be expanded. Metanaturalism holds that the natural world includes more than current science acknowledges—not supernatural additions, but natural phenomena not yet incorporated into scientific understanding. Consciousness, paranormal experiences, spiritual phenomena—these may be natural, just not yet naturalized. Metanaturalism is naturalism that has learned humility, that knows its current map is incomplete, and that remains open to nature being stranger than we currently imagine.

"Science says near-death experiences are just brain chemistry. Metanaturalism says: maybe brain chemistry is how consciousness does what it does, but the experiences people report—the light, the peace, the meetings—might still be real. Real doesn't mean supernatural; it might mean nature is richer than our models. Stay open, stay curious, stay naturalist but not closed."
