Kalte

An icy wilderness area in the far north of the realm of Magnamund (the world of Joe Dever's Lone Wolf books). The term refers to the whole of the northern polar regions, but especially to the area nearest to Sommerlund, surrounding the city of Ljuk.

Ljuk, a Sommlending trading post, is listed in the Magnamund Companion as the capital of Kalte, although this is inaccurate. In fact, the bulk of Kalte is ruled by the Ice Barbarians, who appear to be predominantly nomadic but to have a fixed headquarters in the north of Kalte.

The realm of Kalte appears mainly in Lone Wolf 3: The Caverns of Kalte and the corresponding novel, Hunting Wolf. Lone Wolf goes to Kalte in pursuit of the rogue wizard Vonotar, and, after facing various dangers in his journey across the ice, must find his way into and through the underground fortress in the north of Kalte.
Kalte is home to a number of cold-weather monsters not found anywhere else in Magnamund.

Ice Barbarians

A group of human warriors appearing in Lone Wolf 3 and World of Lone Wolf 5. Perhaps the most objectionable of the portrayals modelled loosely on actual groups, since the Ice Barbarians are warlike, vicious and xenophobic, and are ruled by a tyrannical monarch, the Brumalmarc. They are therefore very different from real-world peoples such as the Inuit and Aleut who seem to provide a model for their dress and culture.

Ice Barbarians appear to be nomadic, living in the icy wilderness of Kalte and attacking interlopers. They fight in small bands, with each warrior accompanied by a small child carried on their back. Both warrior and child are armed with bows, and the warriors travel swiftly across the ice by using ski-like snowshoes.

Despite their warlike inclinations, the Ice Barbarians presumably trade with the Sommlending, since otherwise the city of Ljuk would have no function.
Lone Wolf 3 is one of the freest of the gamebook series in terms of the routes a player can follow in order to complete the book. Encounters with the Ice Barbarians occur on some routes and can develop in several ways.

trot

Short for Trotskyist. Usually but not always an offensive term, used by opponents of Trotskyism of both left and right persuasions (usually as a descriptive noun, "the trots").

In some settings, such as the National Union of Students, the insult is so pervasive that anyone to the left of Hitler is liable to be labelled a "trot" at one point or another, because the NUS right-wing associate any challenge to their rule with a conspiracy allegedly initiated by a long-defunct Trotskyist group called Socialist Organiser.

The term also crops up sometimes in anarchist and ecological attacks on Trotskyists. It is also occasionally used by Trotskyists themselves, apparently as a "reclaimed" term, only heard within the Trotskyist in-group, although this is contentious and some reject the term completely.

Its derogatory implications probably come from its associations with the trots in its other sense.
