To throw something on the ground is a forceful, if petulant and unreasonable, rejection of an offered object or idea. It's a lot easier to throw a physical object on the ground, but an abstract concept can be figuratively thrown on the ground, as well.

To fly, you'll need to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Difficulty arises because if one is truly trying properly to throw themselves at the ground and fails to miss, chances are that one will fail to miss the ground quite hard.
