Catcher in the rye is about a kid named Holden Cualfield going through life over a few days period.
It was banned by many high schools, and is probaly proclaimed the most banned book in the last century...
It's full of refernces to "Sex", lot's of swearing, and a few refernces to "Drugs", and full of "Alchohal"

WRITTEN BY - J.D. SALLINGER
Quote from Catcher in the Rye---
"'You know what I'd like to be? I mean if it'd be my goddamn choice'"?
'What? stop swearing.'
'You know that song, "if I body catch a body comin' through the rye? I'd like -'
'It's "If a body meet a body coming through the rye"!' old Phoebe said 'It's a poem. By Robert Burns.'
'I know it's a poem by Robert Burns."
She was right, though. It is "If a body meet a body coming through the rye." I didn't know it then, though.
"I thought it was "If a body meet a body,"' I said 'Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're runni ng and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the CATCHER IN THE RYE and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy."
Old Phoebe didn't say anything for a long time."

Get the Catcher in the rye mug.
An amzingly written book.

its overlooked by most people because its a "school book"
I dont like reading it in school beacause my teachers read way into all the meanings and symbolism and crap.
I loved "The Catcher in the Rye" when i read it on my own, but now that my teachers RUINED it for me, i kinda try to avoid it.

One of the great American novels. Fascinating, stream of consiousness style by the famouse recluse author J.D. Salinger. Any adolescent who reads this book should beable to relate to the narrator, Holden Caulfield. He struggles with alienation, nihilism, and disillusionment with the modern, post-industrial captitalist state.
Catcher In The Rye is the only good book I ever read in highschool.

a really great book that most people find disturbing just because it has too many curses and sex and stuff. but these haters are all really idiots and hypocites who act like they never said a curse or thought about sex in their whole life.
Guy #1: Hey do u like the Catcher in the Rye?
Guy #2: F*ck no
#1: Why?
#2: That guy curses alot.

Get the a catcher in the rye mug.
(verb)

to stroke someone's hair in a creeper-like fashion, just like how Mr. Antolini did in "The Catcher in the Rye" to Holden Caulfield.
*comes up behind and creepishly strokes a person's hair* "I just Catcher in the Rye'd you"

Catcher in the Rye was written by J. D. Salinger. It's a novel about a red hat wearing candyass who thinks all adults are phonies; failing to see the essential poseur that is so him! For some reason older Baby Boomers get all tear-eyed about this book, thinking it's the one that spoke for their generation which, unfortunately, we hear too much from already.
