Muang, or Mueang, means city or town in Thai, Lao, and other Tai-Kadai languages.
The word spelling differs by each region.
Chinese : Meng (e.g. Mengla & Menghai of Xishuangbanna Autonomous Region)
Burmese : Mong (e.g. Mong Hsat in Shan State)
Malay : Me (e.g. Menara for Narathiwat Province)
Vietnamese : Muong

Every province in Thailand (excluding Bangkok) has Muang as a district/an Amphur (Am-per) name.
