To 'moapse' means to be miserable, and to appear to be so. Very common word used in mid-Cheshire, UK, by most people, so probably heard in surrounding districts. Since I've never actually seen the word in print, it could be spelt in a variety of ways . .

John, stop moapsing about and wash these dishes! And don't moapse !
