If you look at the phonetics of the original, owned, it has a very round, relaxed sound to it. The sharper "pwned", however, is fast and furious, like the cracking of a whip, the firing of a silenced gun, or a motherfucking laser weapon.

Pwned means to completely dominate the opposition, or impose a humiliating defeat on the enemy. This term is used mostly in online games.

After winning, he typed with one-hand the word "owned", which ended as a mistype, with the "p" replacing the letter "o" (P and O are next to each other on the QWERTY keyboard). Instead of correcting the mistake, other players started using it, which soon spread to popular games, like Starcraft I and Warcraft III.

Created in 1972 by the 3rd SOG (Special Operations Group) when a Lt. Colonel Hank Munro shot a Vietnamese sentry with a Mk22 Hush Puppy. Due to the tension at the time, he inadvertantly said "pwned" instead of "Delta, move in and eliminate all hostiles." The subsequent death of Lt. Col. Munro as he charged a heavily fortified position lead to the term "pwned" being adopted as short-hand for "that dumbass just got his ass whupped in a helluva funny way."

Definition: A corrupted version of the word "owned". Due to the fact that the "P" and "O" keys on a standard QWERTY keyboard are so close together it can be easy to miss the "O" key and accidentally hit the "P" key. The word itself means to exel at the game or kill someone in a game.
