He joined the Death Eaters at 16, but after seeing first-hand what Voldemort was capable of, he had a change of heart and turned against him. He figured out Voldemort's secret and sacrificed himself trying to destroy him. If not for Regulus' sacrifice, Voldemort would never have been defeated by Harry and the series would have ended 'rocks fall. everyone dies.'
