Could be a recurring inside joke, the way they loop their Ys at the end of words, the fact that they love almonds and love chocolate but hate when they're mixed together, their love of anything velvet and forest green; any of the multitude of small things that might remind you of them.

Its a white person that has darker skin because one of his/her parent is black and the other is one white. It's basically a half white and half black (Half African and Half Caucasian (Caucasus, Russian, Turkish)/European) but mostly whiter.
John: Hey, what's your ethnicity?
Noah: I'm gray person.
John: ?
Noah: I'm white but darker.
John: Oh, Alright.
