gay friend

An insult, although not meant to disparage actual gay people. It is a pheneomenon in which a heterosexual man unsuccessfully attempts to woo a woman and winds up being an intimate but wholly platonic friend instead. The man naively believes that if he just sticks around long enough, and shows the woman his sincerity, a romantic relationship will eventually develop. In actuality, this will never, ever happen. Hence the man is the "de-facto gay friend." One can also be a "post-relationship gay friend." In this situation, a romantic relationship ends, but the woman says, "let's be friends; I still want you to be my best friend." The man, somewhat pathetically, agrees to this proposal because of confusion, cowardice, or simple foolishness.

Don't be the gay friend, dude, because she's not really interested.

Best Friend

Best Friends are very special people in your life. They are the first people you think about when you make plans. They are the first people you go to when you need someone to talk to. You will phone them up just to talk about nothing, or the most important things in your life. When you’re sad they will try their hardest to cheer you up. They give the best hugs in the world! They are the shoulder to cry on, because you know that they truly care about you. In most cases they would take a bullet for you, coz it would be too painful to watch you get hurt.

friend zone syndrome

An affliction where a patient uses "friend zone" unironically.
The patient sees friendships with people of sexual appeal as a failure.

In fact, this is actually a symptom of a number of other hidden problems (failure to meet new people regularly, failure to negotiate sexuality in an upfront way, failure to enjoy the sorts of people one is interested in sleeping with, and so on)

A: "Someone I know isn't giving me sex. I mean, I haven't been upfront, because I fear even polite rejection... But the only thing I want from them is sex, and they're the only person I am going to meet this year. Please, help me get out of the friend zone!"

B: "That's your problem: you've got friend zone syndrome."
