Also known as "speechreading", lip reading is a communication technique of understanding speech by watching a person's lip movements, facial expressions, and gestures, which can be enhanced by any residual hearing. It's a skill used by many people with hearing loss but also by the general public in noisy environments to aid comprehension. The technique is not foolproof, as many sounds look alike on the lips, and a complete understanding relies on context and other clues.
During the lecture, I noticed she was lip reading to keep up with the professor, especially when the classroom got really loud.
