don't shit in your own backyard

A variant of "don't bite the hand that feeds you", 'Don't shit in your own backyard' means don't trash a good thing, take advantage of or ruin a close relationship. If you have a positive situation or loving or giving person in your life, you should be careful to protect it/them. When you abuse the situation, person or relationship and deliberately commit an act that you know is potentially harmful or injurious to the situation or person that is good to you, you run the risk of ruining it. Any act that you know would hurt the one with whom you are affiliated and potentially ruin the relationship forever if they found out. The hospitable one (the house with the yard or security) is fouled or injured by your actions (shit upon) which ultimately poisons the soil (the growth medium, sustaining qualities that nurture). Conscious or willful sabotage through selfish actions that generally involves planning and premeditation but can be impulsive. An ultimate act of betrayal through a degree of separation that taints or destroys a perfectly good thing or relationship for no good reason.

Examples of "don't shit in your own backyard" would include pursuing/sleeping with your best friend's or bosses' spouse or significant other; pursuing/sleeping with a mentor's friend; pursuing/sleeping with a friend's close friend that you're interested in; using a person to get close to another; stealing your parent's/friend's car; ditching a loving parent for another adult; keeping secrets you know would further hurt the injured party; wiping the house you're staying at clean; stealing from a friend or relative.

terrell owens

a pompous, arrogant, immature child who is a sad excuse for an NFL player. Currently, this wiesel's outcries have put him out for the rest of the 2005-2006 season. He has single handedly torn apart two NFL teams (49ers and Eagles). He always publicly humiliates his quarterback, his team, and the organization. He loves being the center of attention which is part of the reason he gets in toruble with his team a lot. He is also a complete idiot because he would have made $9M in the 06-07 season if he would have just kept his big mouth shut. T.O. is the absolute opposite of a team player and the dumb things he's done has definatly impacted the future of his career. Despite that he plays the wide receiver position exceptionally well, his off-the-field antics are not worth it.

T.O.: Hey Mr. Team President, give me more money ... cuz I'm the best
Pres: No, you're an idiot. You're not getting anything. Besides, you're not even the best receiver in the league.
T.O.: Oh well then i'll just go run my mouth of TV.
Pres: Go ahend. Nobody listens to you anyway Terrell Owens.

A phrase used by a person who likes to eat shit, to some extent knows that eating shit is bad for them, but doesn't acknowledge that fact and therefore dismiss it.

It can be seen as a modern analogy to Plato's cave.

Example (à la Patrick's wallet meme):

PC user: You know that the baseline Mac Pro costs 5 times as much money than a similarly-spec'd windows based machine, right?

Apple user: Yup.

PC user: And you know that you can custom build your own PC, right?

Apple user: Yup.

PC user: And even get a similar Mac Pro computer case?

Apple user: Yup.

PC user: And configure it to run Mac OS?

Apple user: Yup.

PC user: Then why did you buy the Mac Pro?!?!??
