It is used to define a girl who is a friend. So when a guy introduces a girl as his friend, he can just say that she's a girl-friend and not make others think about ship names at that instance itself.

Boy: Mom, she's my girl-friend, she's more like a dude than a girl so shhhh.

A best friend is that person to hype you up for things that don’t even makes sense but makes you happier. A best friend listens and understands and not counter everything you say. A best friend is that person that just makes sense to keep.
