They are scared of continuing on, so they try everything in their power to go back to the "normal" days. Thus, "echoing" the past in their hopes to return to "normal". They often reminisce about the past and find themselves uncontrollably crying at the slightest hint of nostalgia. They aren't necessarily afraid of change. Rather, they're afraid of not being able to control it and go back.
